Corpus Christi — The Glory of Fathers

The Glory of Fathers

Summary

Paul writes not to shame the Corinthians but to admonish them as his beloved children, revealing what spiritual fatherhood looks like and what it asks of God's people. The sermon unfolds this text under three headings. First, The Way of Fathers (vv. 14–15) — however many guardians they may have, they do not have many fathers, for Paul became their father in Christ Jesus through the gospel; spiritual fatherhood is not a title or an office but a begetting work, born of gospel labor and deep affection. Second, Therefore, Imitate Me (vv. 16–17) — because Paul is their father in Christ, he calls them to imitate him, and it is precisely for this reason that he has sent Timothy, who will remind them of his way in Christ, a way practiced everywhere in every church, so that imitation of faithful leaders becomes the path by which the church is built up in unity. Third, The Kingdom of Power (vv. 18–21) — some had become arrogant, supposing Paul would not come to them again, but he is coming soon, and then they will know not the speech of those who are puffed up but the power, for the kingdom of God does not consist in talk but in power; what does Paul want? Not a quarrel but a loving heart and repentance, coming with the rod of discipline or with love and a gentle spirit.
