A Kingdom Without a Cross

Summary

Paul contrasts the Corinthians' self-satisfied reign with the apostles' sufferings, exposing how far the church had drifted from the way of Christ. The sermon unfolds this text under three headings. First, A Carnal Coronation (v. 8) — the Corinthians acted as though they were already kings, rich and full, reigning without their apostles, a posture of self-satisfaction that betrays the church's call to suffer with Christ now and reign with him later. Second, A Crossless Christianity (vv. 9–10) — Paul shows the strange spectacle God has made of the apostles: last of all, condemned to death, a spectacle to the world, fools for Christ's sake, while the Corinthians prided themselves on being wise and strong; a Christianity that seeks glory without the cross is not the Christianity of Christ and his apostles. Third, A Costly Commitment (vv. 11–13) — the apostolic life of hunger, thirst, reviling, persecution, and slander, answered with patient endurance, blessing, and entreaty, reveals that following the crucified Lord means bearing the cross in daily life until the day of his coming.
