Summary
Paul confronts the Corinthian church regarding apparent sin and the church's tolerance of said sin. The sermon unfolds this text under three headings. First, Approaching Sin (vv. 1–5) — the church must name and confront sin rather than excuse it. Paul is troubled that they are puffed up where they ought to mourn the sin in their midst. We must recognize sin for what it is, and confront it in a faithful manner. Second, How Sin Works in a Church (vv. 6–8) — a little leaven leavens the whole lump, so sin tolerated in one member quietly spreads through the entire body. Sin's nature corrupts the entire church's witness and its worship. Third, The Limits of Discipline (vv. 9–13) — the church's jurisdiction reaches those who bear the name of Christ and not the world outside, so believers ought to be uniquely concerned with the sins of the saints.
