Those Who Will Inherit

Summary

Paul warns the Corinthians that the unrighteous will not inherit the kingdom of God, then reminds them of what they once were and what God has made them. The sermon unfolds this text under three headings. First, Do You Not Know (v. 9a) — Paul appeals to what the church already ought to know: the unrighteous will not inherit the kingdom of God, and a people who forget this will live as though nothing eternal is at stake. Second, The Destruction of Sin (vv. 9b–10) — Paul names the works of the flesh outright, listing the sins that shut men out of the kingdom, so that sin may be seen for what it is rather than flattered, excused, or renamed; the catalogue is given not to soften the warning but to show sin's ruinous end. Third, Such Were Some of You (v. 11) — but such were some of you, washed, sanctified, and justified in the name of the Lord Jesus Christ and by the Spirit of our God, so that the church's hope lies not in her own goodness but in what Christ has done for her; those who once were unrighteous have been made righteous by grace alone.
