Summary

Because human beings are made in the image of God, the taking of human life is no private matter but a claim upon God's own honor, and the civil magistrate is bound by God's authority to administer justice with righteousness, mercy, impartiality, and restraint. The sermon unfolds this teaching under three headings. First, The Need for the Sword (Genesis 9:5–6) — because there is sin in the world, justice is necessary, and whoever sheds man's blood, by man shall his blood be shed, for God has made man in His own image; the sword exists not out of human cruelty but out of the reality of evil and the worth of the image-bearer. Second, The Heart of the Sword (Micah 6:8) — the pursuit of justice is not cold severity but humble love for God, for righteousness, and for neighbor: to do justly, to love mercy, and to walk humbly with God, so that the magistrate's heart must be shaped by the same grace that teaches the church to love her enemies. Third, The Use of the Sword (Romans 12:19; 13:1–4) — vengeance belongs to the Lord and is forbidden to the private Christian. The governing authority, however, is God's ordained institution. She is His servant and minister of wrath, bearing the sword to execute justice on the evildoer. The sword therefore must be administered faithfully, impartially, and with restraint.
