Wisdom of the Spirit

Summary

Paul speaks a wisdom among the mature, yet not a wisdom of this age or of its rulers who are doomed to pass away. The sermon unfolds this text under three headings. First, The Wisdom of the Spirit Is Not of This World (vv. 6–9) — it is a secret and hidden wisdom of God, decreed before the ages for our glory, which none of the rulers of this age understood, for had they understood it they would not have crucified the Lord of glory; what no eye has seen, nor ear heard, God has prepared for those who love him. Second, The Spirit Teaches Us Wisdom (vv. 10–13) — these things God has revealed to us through the Spirit, for the Spirit searches everything, even the depths of God, and we have received the Spirit who is from God that we might understand the things freely given us by God, imparting them in words taught by the Spirit. Third, Only the Spiritual Can Discern Truth and Wisdom (vv. 14–16) — the natural person does not accept the things of the Spirit of God, for they are folly to him and he is not able to understand them because they are spiritually discerned, but the spiritual person judges all things, for we have the mind of Christ.
