Summary
The feeding of the five thousand is not primarily a lesson about Jesus' power to meet everyday needs. Because John situates it at Passover, it is a deliberate teaching about the atonement — and the single instruction "have the people sit down" is the interpretive key. It declares that sinners contribute nothing to their own salvation. Christ meets genuine need with mercy, not rebuke.
