Summary

Paul reminds the Corinthians to consider their calling, for not many of them were wise according to worldly standards, not many were powerful, not many were of noble birth. The sermon unfolds this text under three headings. First, Not Many Are Wise — the church at Corinth, like the church in every age, was not composed of the elite of the world; God did not choose them because of their status, intellect, or strength, so that no one might glory in himself. Second, God Uses the Foolish to Shame the Wise — God chose what is foolish in the world to shame the wise, what is weak to shame the strong, what is low and despised, even things that are not, to bring to nothing things that are, so that no human being might boast in the presence of God. Third, Christ Jesus Is Our Wisdom — because of God we are in Christ Jesus, who became to us wisdom from God, righteousness and sanctification and redemption, so that, as it is written, let the one who boasts, boast in the Lord.
